MIAO XIAO CHUN
1964년생으로 중국 베이징에서 거주하고 활동하고 있는 미아오 샤오춘은 중국 북경의 중앙미술학원에서 미술사를 독일 카셀 국립조형예술대학에서 순수미술을 전공했다.
미아오 샤오춘은 현재 중국 미술계를 이끌고 있는 양대 산맥인 중앙미술학원의 사진 및 디지털 미디어학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 그는 중국은 말할 나위 없고, 유럽 각지와 미국에서 수차례의 개인전 및 단체전 그리고 국제비엔날레에 초대되었으며 국내에서는 서울시립미술관의 미디어아트 비엔날레, 부산 비엔날레, 국제포토 페스티벌 등과 같은 국제미술행사들을 통해 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있는 작가이다. 중국 현대미술의 중심인물로 세계의 주요 컬렉터들이 가장 선호하는 작가로 꼽히고 있으며 단연 중국 사진가 중 최고봉으로 중국이 자랑하는 국제적 예술가로써 중국, 독일, 미국에 전속 갤러리를 가지고 있다.

죽음을 탄생에서, 탄생을 죽음에서 보기 위해
지옥을 천국에서, 천국을 지옥에서 보기 위해
끝을 시작에서 그리고 끝에서 시작을 보기 위해
히에로니무스 보스(Hieronymus Bosch)의 <지상 쾌락의 동산 The Garden of Earth Delight>을 대면한 나는 새로운 두 가지 시도를 원했다.
첫째, 본래의 삼면화를 9개의 패널 페인팅으로 재조명하는 것과 3차원 소프트웨어를 사용해서 하나의 시선을 9개의 투시 시점으로 재탄생 시키는 것이다. 이 차원의 그림을 삼차원의 장면으로 다시 수정한 후에 옆면의 그림들을 원래 세 개의 장면을 고찰하는 것에 의해서 다양한 시점을 반영한다. 이때 다른 시점들에 의해서 같은 차원이 함께 연결 된다.
천국으로부터 우리가 죽음을 보는 탄생에서,
그리고 우리가 탄생을 뒤돌아보는 죽음으로부터
우리가 종착점을 보는 시작에서,
그리고 시작을 보는 종착점으로부터
둘째, 고대 우화를 현대 우화로 재조명하는 것이다. 보스의 원작은 수많은 인물들의 극적인 장면들을 보여주며, 쉽게 해석할 수 없는 수 많은 내용들이 그려져 있다. 나는 새로운 형식의 미스테리를 창조하고 세상에 대한 나의 관점을 함축적으로 표현하기 위해 현대언어를 사용하길 원했다. 이를 통해 다른 시대에 속하는 미스테리들을 파헤치는 것은 하나의 대안방법이었다.
공간과 시간에 대한 다른 관점으로부터,
우리 자신의 세상을 발견하기 위해 우리는 얼마나 많은 것을 확대해야 하는가?
우리의 탄생은 진정한 탄생인가...
우리의 죽음은 진정한 죽음인가...
우리의 행복과 고통은 진정으로 행복이고 고통인가...
산이 높고 바다가 깊게 보이기 위해
우리는 얼마나 많은 것을 확대하여 보여주어야 하는가...
