황혜선작가의 작품활동은 1990년대 후반부터 오늘에 이르기까지 어느새 20년을 훌쩍 넘기며 ‘드로잉-조각’이라는 독자적 자기 세계를 구축해왔다. 초기 작품활동을 시작한 20대의 젊은 날, 작가의 화두는 “소통(Communication)”이었다. 실리콘 귀마개로 만들어진 <Unplugged>(1995), 풍선껌으로 만든 귀 형상 <His Ear>(1995) 등은 현실과 내면에서 소통되지 않은 순간의 먹먹함을 담았다. 전시장을 가로지르며 리본테입에 평론가 박영택의 글을 금사수를 놓았던 수행성 작업은 귀기울임과 반응의 실천적 성격이었으나, 작가를 “침묵”의 세계로 이끌었다. 90년대말 작가는 “침묵(Silence)”의 곱씹음과 성찰로 조형적 예리함을 연마했다. 지우개 찌거기로 사물과 상황을 <드로잉>(1999) 했던, 즉 흔적을 소거하는 것으로부터 다시 형상이나 상황을 드러내는 예민한 위트나, 흰색 캐버스천으로 정물화의 기물인 컵, 주전자, 화병 등을 바느질해 완성했던 절제된 형상 <Still Life>(1999) 등이 그 예다. 2000년대로 들어오면서 본격적인 드로잉-조각 시기로 다양한 재료와 드로잉이 수직적 수평적 깊이를 만들어냈다. 2006년 무렵, 작가는 “침묵”을 깨고 “발화(Utterance)”를 시작한다. <너무나 믿기 때문에 채울수도 덜어낼 수 없는>(2006) 스테인레스스틸 양동이 작업이나, <발이 닿지 않는> 유리에 엣칭, <흘리지못한 눈물>의 크리스탈 엣칭, <끝없이 갈라지는 길들이 있는 정원>의 유리에 실크스크린 작업 등은 문자그대로 작가의 말하기였다. 작가의 발화가 내면의 층을 꺼내고 드러내며, 2018년을 전후해서 네번째 “관계(Relation) 혹은 조화(Harmony)”의 시기에 도달한다. 타인과의 관계나 시선에도 스스로가 흔들리지 않는 유연한 견고함이 빛난다.
작가의 드로잉은 평면에서 공간으로 형상을 기억시키듯 부유한다. 찰나가 영원으로 각인되는 일련의 작업 과정은 이미지, 붓 드로잉, 알루미늄 선각, 유리, 거울, 철판 등 여러 재료의 평면이 관통된 ‘드로잉-조각(drawing-sculpture)’으로 완결된다. 평면에서 일상의 성찰과도 같은 행위로써 붓 드로잉은 공간에서 선과 면으로 다시 추출되거나 펼쳐진다. 이 같은 회화와 조각을 넘나드는 작가의 작업은 영역의 탈경계와 정서가 밀착된 수행적 행위와도 같다. 작가를 만난 1999년부터 2020년 현재까지 그는 작업에서 일상과 예술, 행위와 사유, 평면과 공간, 표면과 깊이, 음각과 양각, 표면과 이면 등 다른 영역들의 경계를 풀어놓음으로써 실존적 사유에 다가서게 한다.

Hwang Hae sun's artwork activities have been building her own self-world called 'Drawing-Sculpture', well over 20 years from the late 1990s to today. In her early twenties, the artist's topic was "Communication". <Unplugged> (1995) made of silicone earplugs and <His Ear> (1995) made of bubble gum contain the darkness of the moment when reality is not communicated inside. The performance work, which crossed the exhibition hall and placed critic Park Young taik's writings on the ribbon tape, was a practical nature of listening and reaction, but led the artist to a world of "silence." In the late 1990s, the artist honed her sculptural sharpness with the brooding and reflection of "Silence". <Drawing> (1999) objects and situations with eraser scraps. It's sensitive wit that from removal of traces to re-exposes figures or situations. <Still Life> (1999) is a restrained figure completed by sewing cups, pots, and vases, which are still-life objects with white canvas. Around 2006, the artist broke the silence and began "Utterance". <It can't be filled or removed because it is too believed> (2006) that stainless steel bucket, <cannot be reached> with the etching of glass, <tears that cannot be spilled> with crystal etching, and the work of a glass silk screen in <Garden with endless cracks> were literally the words of the artist. The artist's utterances take out and reveal the inner layers, reaching the fourth period of "Relation or Harmony" around 2018. The flexible firmness that does not waver in relationships or gaze with others shines.

작업의 시작은 마치 일기처럼 매일 그리는 드로잉에서 시작된다.
그것은 어떤 상황으로 그려지기도 하고 사물들로 그려 지기도 하지만,
내가 그리고 싶은 것은 그것들이 존재했던 순간이다.
다시는 돌아오지 않을 지금 여기 이순간.
나의 드로잉은 손으로 떠올린 물이 손가락 사이로 느끼지 못할 사이 사라져버리는 것처럼
늘 일상에서 슬며시 잊혀지고 말 기억들을 생생한 기억의 기록이 아닌,
그저 그 순간에 스쳤을 사물들이나 광경으로 슬며시 붙들어두고 싶은 거다.
다른 사람들에게는 의미 없는 사물들로 보여질지도..
그러나 생생한 기억은 아프다. 잊혀질까 두렵고 기억해 내지 못할까 미리 아프다.
그래서 나는 귀퉁이에 있었을 그저 그런 사물로 기억을 대신한다.
누구나의 기억 속에도 존재할법한 사물들.
매일 조금씩 그려지는 드로잉들은
다시 작업 안에서 유리 위에 그려져 겹쳐지거나 화면 안에 구성되어 지면서
전혀 다른 공간과 의미를 만들어낸다.
어느 책에서 유리에 대해 '차단되고 싶으면서도 완전하게 차단되기 싫은 마음, 그것이 유리를 존재하게 한다.' 라는 글을 읽은 적 있다.
또한 작가는 안에 있으면서도 밖을 동경하는 마음 때문에 사람은 분명 유리를 만들어냈으며
안과 밖의 경계를 만들면서 동시에 허무는 것이라 유리를 정의했다.
내가 즐겨 쓰는 유리라는 재료의 속성은 너무나도 내 작업의 정의와 같다.
안과 밖, 입체와 평면, 의미 있음과 없음 같은 이분법적 구분이 아닌 것들로 존재하는 상태.
나는 내 작업이 항상 그 경계 위에 애매모호하게 놓여지길 원한다.
The work begins from the drawings I record daily as if they were a diary.
They are sometimes drawn to express an event or an object,
but the moment I wanted to draw was the moment they existed.
This moment that will never come back.
As if the water scooped by a hand that disappears without myself even feeling their disappearance,
I hope my drawings to capture the vague moment of my experience, not a vivid experience.
Even they might seem meaningless to others…
Scared of being forgotten and afraid of not being able to remember.
So I replace the memories with insignificant objects. Things that are likely to exist in anyone’s memories.
Those drawings that are drawn little by little everyday creates new space and meaning
when they are drawn upon a glass or replaced in a screen.
I have read in a book about the mind that hopes to be blocked by the glass, but not completely, makes the glass exist.
The artist has also said that humans have created glass due to the desire to be inside and outside at the same time,
defining the glass as something that destructs the boundary of inside and outside.
The property of the glass as a material I often use looks alike the definition of my work.
I hope my works to be equivocal on the boundaries of ‘this’ or ‘that.’

황혜선작가의 작품활동은 1990년대 후반부터 오늘에 이르기까지 어느새 20년을 훌쩍 넘기며 ‘드로잉-조각’이라는 독자적 자기 세계를 구축해왔다. 초기 작품활동을 시작한 20대의 젊은 날, 작가의 화두는 “소통(Communication)”이었다. 실리콘 귀마개로 만들어진 <Unplugged>(1995), 풍선껌으로 만든 귀 형상 <His Ear>(1995) 등은 현실과 내면에서 소통되지 않은 순간의 먹먹함을 담았다. 전시장을 가로지르며 리본테입에 평론가 박영택의 글을 금사수를 놓았던 수행성 작업은 귀기울임과 반응의 실천적 성격이었으나, 작가를 “침묵”의 세계로 이끌었다. 90년대말 작가는 “침묵(Silence)”의 곱씹음과 성찰로 조형적 예리함을 연마했다. 지우개 찌거기로 사물과 상황을 <드로잉>(1999) 했던, 즉 흔적을 소거하는 것으로부터 다시 형상이나 상황을 드러내는 예민한 위트나, 흰색 캐버스천으로 정물화의 기물인 컵, 주전자, 화병 등을 바느질해 완성했던 절제된 형상 <Still Life>(1999) 등이 그 예다. 2000년대로 들어오면서 본격적인 드로잉-조각 시기로 다양한 재료와 드로잉이 수직적 수평적 깊이를 만들어냈다. 2006년 무렵, 작가는 “침묵”을 깨고 “발화(Utterance)”를 시작한다. <너무나 믿기 때문에 채울수도 덜어낼 수 없는>(2006) 스테인레스스틸 양동이 작업이나, <발이 닿지 않는> 유리에 엣칭, <흘리지못한 눈물>의 크리스탈 엣칭, <끝없이 갈라지는 길들이 있는 정원>의 유리에 실크스크린 작업 등은 문자그대로 작가의 말하기였다. 작가의 발화가 내면의 층을 꺼내고 드러내며, 2018년을 전후해서 네번째 “관계(Relation) 혹은 조화(Harmony)”의 시기에 도달한다. 타인과의 관계나 시선에도 스스로가 흔들리지 않는 유연한 견고함이 빛난다.
작가의 드로잉은 평면에서 공간으로 형상을 기억시키듯 부유한다. 찰나가 영원으로 각인되는 일련의 작업 과정은 이미지, 붓 드로잉, 알루미늄 선각, 유리, 거울, 철판 등 여러 재료의 평면이 관통된 ‘드로잉-조각(drawing-sculpture)’으로 완결된다. 평면에서 일상의 성찰과도 같은 행위로써 붓 드로잉은 공간에서 선과 면으로 다시 추출되거나 펼쳐진다. 이 같은 회화와 조각을 넘나드는 작가의 작업은 영역의 탈경계와 정서가 밀착된 수행적 행위와도 같다. 작가를 만난 1999년부터 2020년 현재까지 그는 작업에서 일상과 예술, 행위와 사유, 평면과 공간, 표면과 깊이, 음각과 양각, 표면과 이면 등 다른 영역들의 경계를 풀어놓음으로써 실존적 사유에 다가서게 한다.

Hwang Hae sun's artwork activities have been building her own self-world called 'Drawing-Sculpture', well over 20 years from the late 1990s to today. In her early twenties, the artist's topic was "Communication". <Unplugged> (1995) made of silicone earplugs and <His Ear> (1995) made of bubble gum contain the darkness of the moment when reality is not communicated inside. The performance work, which crossed the exhibition hall and placed critic Park Young taik's writings on the ribbon tape, was a practical nature of listening and reaction, but led the artist to a world of "silence." In the late 1990s, the artist honed her sculptural sharpness with the brooding and reflection of "Silence". <Drawing> (1999) objects and situations with eraser scraps. It's sensitive wit that from removal of traces to re-exposes figures or situations. <Still Life> (1999) is a restrained figure completed by sewing cups, pots, and vases, which are still-life objects with white canvas. Around 2006, the artist broke the silence and began "Utterance". <It can't be filled or removed because it is too believed> (2006) that stainless steel bucket, <cannot be reached> with the etching of glass, <tears that cannot be spilled> with crystal etching, and the work of a glass silk screen in <Garden with endless cracks> were literally the words of the artist. The artist's utterances take out and reveal the inner layers, reaching the fourth period of "Relation or Harmony" around 2018. The flexible firmness that does not waver in relationships or gaze with others shines.

작업의 시작은 마치 일기처럼 매일 그리는 드로잉에서 시작된다.
그것은 어떤 상황으로 그려지기도 하고 사물들로 그려 지기도 하지만,
내가 그리고 싶은 것은 그것들이 존재했던 순간이다.
다시는 돌아오지 않을 지금 여기 이순간.
나의 드로잉은 손으로 떠올린 물이 손가락 사이로 느끼지 못할 사이 사라져버리는 것처럼
늘 일상에서 슬며시 잊혀지고 말 기억들을 생생한 기억의 기록이 아닌,
그저 그 순간에 스쳤을 사물들이나 광경으로 슬며시 붙들어두고 싶은 거다.
다른 사람들에게는 의미 없는 사물들로 보여질지도..
그러나 생생한 기억은 아프다. 잊혀질까 두렵고 기억해 내지 못할까 미리 아프다.
그래서 나는 귀퉁이에 있었을 그저 그런 사물로 기억을 대신한다.
누구나의 기억 속에도 존재할법한 사물들.
매일 조금씩 그려지는 드로잉들은
다시 작업 안에서 유리 위에 그려져 겹쳐지거나 화면 안에 구성되어 지면서
전혀 다른 공간과 의미를 만들어낸다.
어느 책에서 유리에 대해 '차단되고 싶으면서도 완전하게 차단되기 싫은 마음, 그것이 유리를 존재하게 한다.' 라는 글을 읽은 적 있다.
또한 작가는 안에 있으면서도 밖을 동경하는 마음 때문에 사람은 분명 유리를 만들어냈으며
안과 밖의 경계를 만들면서 동시에 허무는 것이라 유리를 정의했다.
내가 즐겨 쓰는 유리라는 재료의 속성은 너무나도 내 작업의 정의와 같다.
안과 밖, 입체와 평면, 의미 있음과 없음 같은 이분법적 구분이 아닌 것들로 존재하는 상태.
나는 내 작업이 항상 그 경계 위에 애매모호하게 놓여지길 원한다.
The work begins from the drawings I record daily as if they were a diary.
They are sometimes drawn to express an event or an object,
but the moment I wanted to draw was the moment they existed.
This moment that will never come back.
As if the water scooped by a hand that disappears without myself even feeling their disappearance,
I hope my drawings to capture the vague moment of my experience, not a vivid experience.
Even they might seem meaningless to others…
Scared of being forgotten and afraid of not being able to remember.
So I replace the memories with insignificant objects. Things that are likely to exist in anyone’s memories.
Those drawings that are drawn little by little everyday creates new space and meaning
when they are drawn upon a glass or replaced in a screen.
I have read in a book about the mind that hopes to be blocked by the glass, but not completely, makes the glass exist.
The artist has also said that humans have created glass due to the desire to be inside and outside at the same time,
defining the glass as something that destructs the boundary of inside and outside.
The property of the glass as a material I often use looks alike the definition of my work.
I hope my works to be equivocal on the boundaries of ‘this’ or ‘that.’
